Target Audience Families with children (birthday venue) and educational groups.
How&How how.studio/branding/chester-zoo Our brand idea— ‘Force for Nature’—speaks to Chester Zoo’s bias for action and positive momentum. The new logo is a custom ‘C’ with a hidden counter form inspired by a rhinoceros’ horn, referencing the Zoo’s history of supporting critically endangered Eastern Black Rhinos that dates back to 1999 and helped to breed a rare calf. Alongside this, we created a custom typeface with Sharp Type: a twist on a Grotesk with cuts and curls to mimic tails, leaves and claws. The verbal identity was created to get people to connect, care and act, with messaging always linking what’s going on in the Zoo with what’s happening in the field.
I got the chance to go to the aquarium and look around, gathering photos as I went. They have a lot of information as you walk around the tanks but it's very text heavy and not engaging, everything is consistent but outdated.
RZSS www.rzss.org.uk/about/our-mission Our mission is to save wildlife and empower people in Scotland and around the world to protect, value and love nature.
Bristol Zoo bristolzoo.org.uk/bristol-zoological-society Bristol Zoological Society is a conservation and education charity that works around the world. Our mission is Saving Wildlife Together. We save wildlife together through conservation science research, working to protect species and habitats overseas, encouraging sustainable behaviours and perceptions, educating tomorrow’s wildlife warriors and connecting people with nature through a great day out.
The Lake District Coast Aquarium Maryport - rebranded as Maryport Aquarium I contacted the aquarium with a list of questions and received the following information to help with successful branding.
Logos
I was liking the direction this was heading in but felt it needed more to it.
Customised the Q and curved the edges to make it more inviting and friendly.
Font Choice
Went with a shell to keep the coastal feel to it without being as obvious as a fish but had a fear it would look too much like a seaside shop. As I started making quick mockups it became very apparent this was the case.
New Logo
Starfish made with the counter shaped fin from the A.
Put it into the real life mockup and didn't like how to copy seemed to disappear.
Don't like, will be redoing.
Business Cards and Tickets
Guest Package Upon Arrival When arriving at reception, guests receive a bundle catered towards younger children to keep them engaged throughout the visit (if purchased at an additional cost when choosing tickets). This includes:
Tote bag
Wristbands
Stickers/badges
Notebook
Colouring pages (inside notebook)
T-shirt (additional cost or purchased separately)
Lanyards also used for school visits.
After speaking to tutors, I need to adapt parts of the logo and broaden the colour palette to include all four colours outlined earlier.
New logo incorporates the A, making Maryport feel part of the word mark too.
Final adjustment to the logo. Made the counter of the A thinner to align with the original shape of the typeface.
New Mockups
Guest Package
Font
Custom display font to use across title pages and logo.
Infographic
Tried experimenting bringing more colours into it but the darker green looked black from a distance so this was removed.
Presentation I had the opportunity to go and pitch the idea to two members of staff at the aquarium and hear their feedback.
